José Esach, elegido nuevo presidente de la CONFENIAE mantendrá la línea política de defensa de los derechos de los pueblos indígenas y la protección del medio ambiente.
El pasado 22 de septiembre de 2023, las bases de la Confederación de Nacionalidades Indígenas de la Amazonia Ecuatoriana (Confeniae) eligieron al nuevo consejo de gobierno, que los próximos tres años estará conducido en calidad de presidente por José Esach, líder indígena Shuar de la provincia de Morona Santiago,
El flamante presidente José Esach, tiene 45 años de edad, es un defensor ambiental reconocido a nivel regional. En 2016 fue perseguido por oponerse a la minería en su comunidad y tuvo que esconderse durante dos años para evitar represalias. En 2021 fue criminalizado nuevamente por oponerse a nuevas exploraciones mineras.
Esach, es un líder experimentado y comprometido con la defensa de los derechos de los pueblos indígenas y la protección del medio ambiente. Quienes apoyaron para alcanzar la presidencia de la Confenaie, elogian y creen que será un valuarte importante para el movimiento indígena ecuatoriano.
El dirigente Esach, durante su mandato aspira lograr la unidad de las organizaciones y nacionalidades que son parte de la organización indígena regional para lograr que las empresas extractivistas y el Estado les respete, más hoy cuando existe fuerte amenazas como la minería ilegal, la tala ilegal de madera y el cambio climático.

El nuevo presidente formula una advertencia al nuevo presidente del Ecuador que se elegirá en octubre, pide que no intenten atropellar sus derechos y que para cualquier acción deben proceder a la consulta previa. “Si eso no hacen, habrá problemas, tenemos el derecho a la resistencia, tampoco estamos para ser serviles ni aceptaremos condiciones”, advirtió Esach.
Igualmente, pidió a la dirigencia de Pachacutik a que depongan actitudes, busquen consensos, destierren la división y los conflictos internos, que políticamente les afecta, ante todo estarán atentos a disposiciones superiores, ya que la Confeniae es orgánica de la Conaie.
La nueva dirigencia tiene la responsabilidad de continuar con el proceso de fortalecimiento de las luchas territoriales y derechos colectivos de cada una de sus bases, así como también cumplir con los acuerdos discutidos en el Congreso.
